I did a brief, 5-week internship at a newspaper in Maryland. They set me up with low-cost housing (a dorm at a local college) and my supervisor was extremely nice and helpful. However, there were days when I probably only did two or three hours worth of work (in an 8-hour day) so it could get slow. But all in all, I ended up with something I could put on my resume and great references from my supervisor. Of course, I had to pay for all that...the credits + travel and transportation + housing amounted to at least $2,000, if not more.
