I got academic credit at the University of Texas for my unpaid internship at Roll Call, the Capitol Hill newspaper. I interned through the Washington Semester program, which is run by American University. I was lucky to have family in Northern Virginia, so I was able to live for free during my summer internship — otherwise, I'm not sure if I would have been able to afford it. But I had an amazing experience, reporting, writing and proofing copy in a newsroom of veteran political journalists. I eventually went on to work at The Washington Post for more than eight years, and I credit my internship with sparking my interest in DC journalism.

I had a really great experience with internships in college. My last semester, I was offered two internships and did not want to turn either of them down because they were both directly related to my major. I went to my advisor who told me it was fine to accept both and to just give them each my letter of approval. I interned at Fox 7 in Austin and Clear Channel Communications on the Bama, Rob and Heather morning show.

I did not receive a full-time position from either, but they gave me more knowledge than I ever expected. Not to mention, the skills I learned helped me get a job about three months after college.

I was happy that I was not restricted from achieving my goals by the school.
