Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell urged the federal government to green-light an exceptional sea voyage to a remote community that he said was in danger of running out of fuel. But people were not in immediate, if any, danger, and critics allege it was more of a business decision.

A January GAO study found that federal obligation to tribal 8(a) firms (which are afforded speical advantages by the Small Business Administration) grew 160 percent from 2005 to 2010, whereas obligations to non-tribal 8(a) firms grew only 45 percent. They also found rampant violations of regulations that limit the amount of subcontracters tribal 8(a) firms can hire. The SBA says they're working to strengthen and develop systems for monitoring and oversight.
