Secret Document Shows NYPD Targeting Shiite Mosques For Surveillance

A 2006 internal NYPD report recommended increasing surveillance of Shiite muslims and their mosques, based solely on religion, as a way to sweep the Northeast for Iranian terrorists. Commissioner Raymond Kelley said the investigations were based on geography, not demographics. Part of a series.

NYPD docs: 'Focus' scrutiny on Muslim Americans

The NYPD and Mayor Bloomberg have asserted that religion does not guide their investigations, but newly obtained documents say, "in the clearest terms yet," that the police "focused" their scrutiny on Muslim Americans. A 2007 investigation into the region's Syrian population, for example, excluded Jews and "focused on the smaller Muslim community."
