The country's biggest drug companies have together paid more than $8 billion in fines for defrauding the government, paying illegal kickbacks to health care providers, and other offenses since 2002. Despite repeat offenses from the same companies, the government can't just stop doing business with them, because to cut them off would mean Medicare and Medicaid patients couldn't get access to their proprietary drugs.
Between 2009 and 2011, about a dozen Connecticut doctors being disciplined by the state for "various medical offenses" also received benefits from drug companies – a duality experts say is "not uncommon."
