| LBLA | $25,000.00 | Grant | LBL was hit by a historically severe ice storm in January 2009. The resulting damage closed hundreds of miles of roads on he National Recreation Area. Lbl's vital role in the $650 million Regional Tourism industry made opening the closed roads a priority; after all tourism was part of the purpose behind the creation of LBL back in the 1960's. many local businesses are dependent on LBL operations being open and available to the public. This project used an agreement with Friends of LBL to hire additional resources to quickly open the roads that had been closed from trees brought down in the ice storm. Without the stimulus funding it is unlikely that LBL would be fully operational and the resulting impacts to the Regional Economy could have been devastating. As a result of an Ice Storm that swept across Kentucky on January 28th-29th 20009, the need and purpose for awarding funds by the Recovery Act was to establish contractors with the proper equipment and expertise that could safely and efficiently restore the Forest Service roads and field accesses back into a safe and passable manner; as well as re-open the Forest back to the general public. An early estimate of nearly 300 miles of FS roads were blocked due to fallen down trees and limb debris, keeping the Kentucky portion of Land Between The Lakes NRA (LBL) which comprises of nearly 100,000 of its 172,000 acres closed and unsafe for use. LBL plays a large beneficating role in the local economy in the surrounding counties and getting LBL back up and running would also prove positive to the local communities and businesses.
