| POLYMER PHASES INC | $100,000.00 | Grant | Trans-NSF Recovery Act Reasearch Support SUSTAINABLE POLYESTERS FOR FOAMS: This Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project will develop new sustainable, biodegradable polyester materials that will replace many currently-used petrochemical polymer plastics. Polymer Phases, Inc. (PPI) has develloped biodegradable materials based on byproducts of bio-fuels. These materials can be somewhat water sensitive and sticky, not unlike many natural polymers. We have found, with modification in the synthetic process, polymers can be dry at room temperature and resistance and toughness properties improved through application processing. The purpose of this proposal is to study the effect of adding materials to these sustainable, biodegradable materials, varying the synthetic process, and changing the composition to see if the polymers will exhibit the performance to replace currently-used petrochemical-based plastics for a broader group of applications beyond adhesives. Polymer Phases, Inc. is seeking a family of polymers that can be extruded into pellets. These pellets need to be dry enough to flow like a powder. For this project's target, the customer would use the pellets to make foam sheets which could be formed into disposable food containers. During this project, PPI will form the foam sheets and compare the performance with polystyrene foam sheets. Petrochemical plastics, which are synthesized from finite supplies of petroleum resources, do not degrade in the environment and therefore contribute to the global accumulation of waste. In addition synthetic polymers are also associated with a number of documented health risks, including cancer, inflammation, and reproductive and endocrine disorders. There is a critical need for alternatives to current synthetic petrochemical polymers. Polymer Phases' unique materials will replace many conventional petrochemical-based polymers, which are derived from non-renewable sources, and which rely heavily on expensive and potentially toxic cross-linkers. PPI's products have potential applications ranging from disposable, biodegradable foams, insulation, bottles, plastic wares, packaging, coatings, plasticizers, film, and biomedical devices. The monomers utilized in PPI's unique synthesis method are non-toxic, renewable materials, and their resulting polyester pre-polymer products are easily biodegraded. Beyond the environmental and health benefits, PPI believes their unique production methods can be developed to yield polymers that are cost-competitive to petroleum raw material polymer products, with mechanical and performance attributes equal to or better than, bio-based or renewable polymers. Activities within this project will be integrated into existing educational programs (such as the Co-op internship) at Drexel University.... | BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF GLOUCESTER COUNTY, INC. | $42,500.00 | Grant |
Recovery Act - Edward Byrne Memorial Competitive Grant Program With the current economic climate negatively affecting most all facets of business, government and industry, for-profits and not-for-profits alike are feeling the pinch, and most all family units are under some level of duress--especiallyy those families that reside in the nation's most distressed areas which are often those hardest hit by even subtle economic challenges. In light of the current recession, many Boys & Girls Clubs are in need of additional resources to help youth and their families cope during these difficult times and to ensure that the Clubs remain an institution of stability and predicatability in the lives of Club members, while essential programs and services continue uninterrupted. Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) will utilize American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA 2009) funding to issue more than 1000 OJP National Mentoring Program grants to sub-recipient Boys & Girls Clubs that will serve to promote economic recovery through the creation and/or preservation of more than 800 Full-Time Equivalents (FTE) jobs. The primary award goals are to preserve and create jobs to expand and enhance mentoring programs and experiences at local Boys & Girls Clubs and to maintain other essential services without interruption. These goals will be met through the administration of three grant objectives. Objective 1: Unit Level Clubs will be required to create and/or preserve Club staff jobs in order to deliver and support the mentoring objectives of the intitative. Clubs will also implement and report performance measures on at least one approved evidence-based mentoring program. Objective 2: Extension Level Clubs will be required to create and/or preserve Club staff jobs in order to deliver and support the mentoring objectives of the intitative. Clubs will also implement and report performance measures on at least one approved evidence-based mentoring program. Objective 3: Native American Clubs (both Unit and Extension Level) will promote economic recovery through the creation and/or preservation of Club staff jobs to deliver and support the mentoring objectives of the inititative. Clubs will also implement and report performance measures on at least one approved evidence-based mentoring program . It is projected that a significant percentage of the jobs created and preserved through this award will be realized in distressed and disadvantaged communities nationwide. Therefore, the mentoring experiences and opportunities created through this award will be delivered to large numbers of often high-risk youth residing in distressed and disadvantaged areas. Additionally, funding from this award will be utilized to ensure the continuation of a number of programs and services at local Boys & Girls Clubs that may have been reduced or possibly eliminated otherwise....
