| NORTH HUDSON COMMUNITY ACTION CORP | $1,055,413.00 | Grant | ARRA ? Health Center Integrated Services Development Initiative[g1] Beginning February 1, 2009 NHCACHC expanded services. In West New York on Monday to Thursday hours increased until 10pm. Sunday availability from 8:30 GÇô 3 was also added. Passaic and Hackensack saw the addition of Saturday servicess (8:30 GÇô 5). Evening hours were added in Passaic as well. The stateGÇÖs funding of these expansions ended June 30. Lacking the monies to continue the expansion would be ended and associated staff terminated as of that date. The first step in our IDS project will be to sustain this expansion thus retaining all associated provider and ancillary positions. Services provided through this expansion include adult medicine, pediatrics, and womenGÇÖs health. However, dental care was not included being available Monday GÇô Friday 8:30 GÇô 5. Our second step in the project would be the expansion of oral health for 1 evening and on Sundays. Dental expansion would entail new hirings. Because of the increased volumes generated NHCACHC will add new positions at its Call Center to handle appointments, and do patient call back and follow ups. Additional data entry positions will also be created to respond to volume increase. In Passaic and Bergen counties community outreach/ educators would be added to assist in increasing awareness of continued service availability evenings and on weekends. In addition, new positions for clinical and ancillary staff to handle the growth anticipated over the course of 2 years will be needed.... | STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (INC) | $762,072.00 | Grant | Trans-NSF Recovery Act Reasearch Support Innovation is a goal, sometimes elusive, of design. Here, in the context of a Master?s course in information system design, we construct and test a series of exercises aimed at promoting innovative designs, inspired by thinking about creative processes in geneeral and the information technology design process in particular. Information design is an ideal platform for the study and promotion of creative processes, because the topological structure of information systems allows development of tools for objective representation of the accuracy, variability, and similarity of designs. We develop three increasingly broad and sophisticated sets of exercises to be tested in design courses. The first set uses exploratory play with the elements of IT design (nodes and links) and priming of fundamental topological structures (trees and hubs) in order to elicit more advanced and creative solutions for initial design problems. The second set uses techniques that encourage abstraction to enable students to transfer designs across domains. The third set employs perceptual manipulation of design topology and conceptual comparisons of design topologies to increase the variability of design solutions students invent. The tool for representing and comparing designs will be turned into a tool for encouraging the generation of varied and novel designs. Because the experiments are embedded in a design course, the exercises will benefit both students and research. Intellectual Merit: Such an undertaking demands expertise in several disciplines, including psychology and information systems. Collectively, the team has expertise in human comprehension and production of diagrams, research design and evaluation of educational methods, and the design of software-intensive information systems. Although there are many methods recommended for teaching systems design, few of these have been empirically tested. The proposed research is novel in that it will look at the intermediate product of IT design, topological sketches, in order to understand the cognitive processes of creativity. From this, we construct methods to assess and to increase design innovation that will be useful to other researchers and instructors. The team bases its predictions and techniques on their current research on the development of design expertise in the classroom context; the team has already produced computational tools that serve as the foundation for the proposed research. The application of these techniques to systems design is novel, and has the potential to improve our understanding of creative processes in information technology. Broader Impact: Poor design, and the resulting poor software, impedes coordination in many government and corporate institutions. Improvements in the education of designers may be amplified by their efforts in practice and in mentoring other designers over the length of their careers. Specific impacts should include improving systems design education, consequently improving the efficacy of software and social systems created by graduates of this and other design programs. For this reason, possible impacts include better homeland security, better economic growth, better social services, and other effects of improved systems design. Thus, insights in this domain may help us improve a broad range of human activities. The research has the potential to be transformative, because design is the way we interact with the future.... | STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (INC) | $430,000.00 | Grant | Trans-NSF Recovery Act Reasearch Support This award is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Public Law 111-5). The research objective of this Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award is to study the crystalline morphologies that naturally form (or can deliberatelyy be formed) during the processing and manufacturing of semicrystalline polymer nanocomposites. These studies will in turn inform efforts to leverage nanoparticle-induced crystallization to directly address two pervasive issues related to the processing of these materials: 1) the ability to quantitatively assess the level of nanoparticle dispersion within the polymer, and 2) the ability to judiciously tailor the nanoparticle-polymer interface in a manner that does not inherently damage the structure, and hence degrade the properties, of the embedded nanoreinforcement. If successful, the results of this research will enable new approaches to address two far-reaching impediments to the manufacture and optimization of semicrystalline polymer nanocomposites, an emerging technology being widely pursued to impart enhanced multifunctional behavior and properties to this technologically important class of polymers. The proposed research program is coupled to an educational initiative that will develop, pilot, and disseminate pedagogically-inspired, simulation-based learning modules which utilize modern engineering software tools to assist undergraduate students in visualizing various fundamental concepts covered within the mechanical engineering curriculum. In pursuing the proposed research and educational efforts the PI will: 1) enthusiastically recruit and mentor undergraduate and graduate students working in these areas, 2) collaborate with local high school teachers and the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education at Stevens to adapt related materials for use within the K-12 STEM curriculum, 3) actively participate in outreach programs to broaden the number of students exposed to engineering and nanotechnology, and 4) develop and strengthen national and international collaborations in these areas. The PI has a proven track record of recruiting from student populations traditionally under-represented in STEM careers.... | STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (INC) | $399,999.00 | Grant | Trans-NSF Recovery Act Reasearch Support It is commonly understood that to achieve a desired level of security in wireless networks is a bigger challenge than in wired networks. The denial of service (DoS) attack is a prominent threat in wired networks, and is a more potent threat in the wireless dommain. This project aims to explore enabling approaches for a novel beamforming framework with cross-layer interactions, referred to as xBeam, as a defense against DoS attacks in wireless networks. This project examines various DoS attacks, develops xBeam algorithms, evaluates the effectiveness of xBeam in deterring DoS attacks, and validates the algorithms using a wireless test bed. Intellectual merit: This project develops a novel defense approach against DoS attacks in wireless networks, which is based on adaptive beamforming with cross-layer interactions. The approach can deter DoS attacks across different networking layers, multiple DoS attacks mounting from different spatial directions, and attacks mounted by malicious attackers who are mobile. Broader impact: This research contributes to a substantial improvement in wireless network security and contributes to the advance of a networked mobile wireless information society. The project supports research oriented education, by providing opportunities for advanced study of wireless network security through coursework and hands-on experimentation. This research also provides quality research experiences for undergraduate students in the summer, particularly students from underrepresented groups.... | STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (INC) | $235,069.00 | Grant | Trans-NSF Recovery Act Reasearch Support Computer vision research and related technology are on the cusp to be taken out of the lab to meet real-world challenges: understanding, reasoning, and navigation in large-scale, dynamic, and complex environments. This project will acquire a state-of-the-art,, custom sensor suite, the 3D Content Digitization Suite (3DCDS), to support research and performance evaluation of computer vision and robotics algorithms in challenging real-world, outdoors, dynamic scenes: 2D-3D fusion for real-time geometry processing; and large-scale scene understanding and hierarchical semantic context inference. 3DCDS includes high-end panoramic laser range sensors, panoramic cameras, navigation equipment, and off-the-shelf cameras arranged on a custom made reconfigurable platform which is mounted on a vehicle. 3DCDS enables testing scene understanding and awareness algorithms under various conditions and it facilitates the collection of ground truth data. Trade-offs across different sensing platforms will be evaluated and the extensive dataset will serve as benchmark for a broad range of algorithms. All data and benchmarks will be made publically available. Stevens will host a web portal for researchers to submit the results of their algorithms on the benchmarks. Research agendas that can be supported by this infrastructure and the collected data span multiple domains and include: fusion of range and image data for inferring accurate, high-resolution, hierarchical scene segmentation; object recognition and scene understanding using invariant features combining geometry and appearance; real-time, dynamic scene awareness; comprehensive evaluation of sensors and methods on ground truth data captured in uncontrolled environments. Deliverables: (i) Evaluation of different sensor configurations; (ii) Algorithms combining range data and imagery; (iii) Large-scale, realistic benchmark datasets for research in computer vision and robotics. Schedule: Year 1: Data acquired under challenging conditions outdoors; range-image registration; geometry processing pipeline; preliminary structure from motion (SfM) and 3D reconstruction. | STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (INC) | $231,571.00 | Grant | Trans-NIH Recovery Act Research Support Bacteria in biofilm show unique physiological characteristics that are much different from planktonic cultured phenotypes. One of the most important features of bacterial biofilms is their resistance to antimicrobial agents and the host immune system attacks. BBacteria living in biofilms can exhibit up to 1,000 time greater resistance to antibiotics than planktonic bacteria. Biofilm associated nosocomial (hospital acquired) infection and disease is currently the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, behind only heart disease, cancer and stroke. Regardless what anti-biofilm methods are used, the success rates are very limited and biofilms will nevertheless form on implanted devices. In most cases, biofilm related infections can only be cured by a high cost and undesirable procedure through the removal of the implants. In this project, we propose to fight against biofilm from a new direction by directly dealing with attached bacteria and formed biofilms. We propose to construct functional surfaces which can interrupt the formation of biofilm architecture. Our hypothesis is that biofilms formed on these functional surfaces with damaged biofilm architectures may not be able to develop antibiotic resistance. Bacteria in such biofilms may maintain antibiotic sensitivity and can be killed by ordinary antibiotic treatment. Three board objectives of this project are to 1) construct surfaces with desired structures and functions; 2) study biofilm formation dynamics and morphologies on functionalized surfaces; 3) test the antibiotic sensitivity of 'biofilms on functionalized surfaces and study sensitizing mechanisms using different antibiotic treatment approaches and fitting data with established mathematic models.... | STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (INC) | $191,250.00 | Grant | Trans-NIH Recovery Act Research Support Despite attractive, ionizing radiations cannot be directly applied in the treatment of bacterial infections since bacteria are extremely insensitive to radiations. The lethal radiation dose for bacteria is at least 1,000 times higher than the whole-body lethal dose for human. In this R21 project, we propose a novel intracellular radiation approach to activate a secondary and local radiation inside of bacteria to damage chromosomal DNAs selectively and specifically. The underlying hypothesis of this project is that: this intracellular radiation can overcome the radiation resistance in bacteria, and the intracellular radiation by itself or in combination with antibiotics may become an effective means to kill antibiotic resistance bacteria. The primary goal of this grant is to achieve the 'proof-of-concept' via well designed in vitro studies. The success of this project may provide a new approach for improved the treatment of bacterial infections and various infection related diseases.... | STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (INC) | $180,000.00 | Grant | Trans-NSF Recovery Act Reasearch Support The project is devoted to theoretical studies of optical frequency comb interaction with molecules. The excitation of two-photon Raman transitions will be investigated, induced by two pulse trains with locked phase, and also by crafted femtosecond pulse trainss. Possibilities of selective excitation of predetermined Raman transitions will be investigated, taking into account effects of decoherence. The objectives are to gain insight into the mechanisms of pulse train interactions with matter, to learn about factors that govern molecular state time evolution, and to develop new control methods of molecular dynamics in the presence of fast decoherence. The investigations will advance modern ultrafast control methods through discovery of new quantum control mechanisms based on frequency comb interaction with molecules. These results will broaden areas of quantum control applications, from detection of molecular species to imaging techniques to quantum gates. Graduate students will get involved in the development of theoretical models, programming, collecting and interpreting data of numerical calculations. The research results will be incorporated into graduate course material of a course 'Methods of Quantum Control'. Students enrolled in this course will learn about advanced quantum control methods, based on latest developments of laser technologies. The research experience and the course study will broaden the opportunities for their career development. Collaboration with experimental groups within the Department of Physics at Stevens Institute of Technology will be initiated, aiming at exploring possibilities of new methods of experimental realization.... Based on the Energy Audit as well as previous problems, the project selected was a new HVAC system for Hoboken's Multi Servicee Center. The Multi Service Center houses senior citizen services, Hoboken Family Planning, child care - day care and after school programs (HOPES Head Start), Hoboken's office of Vital Statistics, recreational services, and the Hudson County Community Action Corporation (providing health services to residents). The majority of these programs serve low/moderate income individuals. The current method of heading/air conditioning for the building is not energy efficient and frequently in a state of disrepair (during extreme weather conditions) forcing certain programs to close. An energy efficient HVAC system will supply a comfortable, healthy atmosphere to the hundreds of individuals taking advantage of the Multi Service Center's services and will eliminate any need for programs having to close due to weather conditions.... Recovery Act - Edward Byrne Memorial Competitive Grant Program With the current economic climate negatively affecting most all facets of business, government and industry, for-profits and not-for-profits alike are feeling the pinch, and most all family units are under some level of duress--especiallyy those families that reside in the nation's most distressed areas which are often those hardest hit by even subtle economic challenges. In light of the current recession, many Boys & Girls Clubs are in need of additional resources to help youth and their families cope during these difficult times and to ensure that the Clubs remain an institution of stability and predicatability in the lives of Club members, while essential programs and services continue uninterrupted. Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) will utilize American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA 2009) funding to issue more than 1000 OJP National Mentoring Program grants to sub-recipient Boys & Girls Clubs that will serve to promote economic recovery through the creation and/or preservation of more than 800 Full-Time Equivalents (FTE) jobs. The primary award goals are to preserve and create jobs to expand and enhance mentoring programs and experiences at local Boys & Girls Clubs and to maintain other essential services without interruption. These goals will be met through the administration of three grant objectives. Objective 1: Unit Level Clubs will be required to create and/or preserve Club staff jobs in order to deliver and support the mentoring objectives of the intitative. Clubs will also implement and report performance measures on at least one approved evidence-based mentoring program. Objective 2: Extension Level Clubs will be required to create and/or preserve Club staff jobs in order to deliver and support the mentoring objectives of the intitative. Clubs will also implement and report performance measures on at least one approved evidence-based mentoring program. Objective 3: Native American Clubs (both Unit and Extension Level) will promote economic recovery through the creation and/or preservation of Club staff jobs to deliver and support the mentoring objectives of the inititative. Clubs will also implement and report performance measures on at least one approved evidence-based mentoring program . It is projected that a significant percentage of the jobs created and preserved through this award will be realized in distressed and disadvantaged communities nationwide. Therefore, the mentoring experiences and opportunities created through this award will be delivered to large numbers of often high-risk youth residing in distressed and disadvantaged areas. Additionally, funding from this award will be utilized to ensure the continuation of a number of programs and services at local Boys & Girls Clubs that may have been reduced or possibly eliminated otherwise....
