Gulf Counties Tax Receipts: Before and After the Spill
The BP oil spill was expected to bring economic hardship to Gulf communities already dealing with the aftermath of the financial crisis. ProPublica examined tax receipts for the 24 most affected communities, from Louisiana to Florida, in the six months that followed the spill and compared year-over-year growth of those six months from 2008 to 2009 and 2009 to 2010. Each community provided different tax records to ProPublica, and each community assesses different kinds of taxes.
