Public Land Order No. 1, dated 20 June 1942, transferred another 33,200 acres to the War Department. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) leased three parcels to the War Department totaling 0.954 acres in the midst of these public lands. Hence, the War Department acquired by Public Land Order, use permit, and leased a total of 67,907.504 acres for Camp Iron Mountain. Camp Iron Mountain is located in the counties of San Bernardino and Riverside, approximately 14 miles west of Rice, California, and 55 miles east of Twenty-nine Palms. Most of the site is owned by the Department of the Interior under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management. A small portion of the former site near the Iron Mountain Pumping Plant is owned by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. This property is known or suspected to contain military munitions and explosives of concern (e.g., unexploded ordnance) and therefore may present an explosive hazard. Update (Dec. 5, 2017): We have changed the source of the installation cost data after being notified by the Department of Defense that they erroneously reported their own cost figures on the DERP website. We are now displaying the costs the department says are the most accurate available, from the Pentagon’s DERP database that we received in a FOIA request.
Note: The risk level of a site refers to a relative risk assessment made by the DOD to prioritize the cleanup of sites.
