A portion of land was deeded to the County of San Luis Obispo by GSA to be managed as a public park and recreational area. In 1982, a portion of land, 453 acres, was deeded to the State to be managed as a public park or public recreation area. In addition, if needed for national defense, the property would revert to the U.S. This 453-acre parcel is currently owned by the Department of Fish and Game. Two quitclaim deeds, dated 20 and 21 March 1968, transferring property currently occupied by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo University to the State of California, contains the restriction that this land shall be used for educational purposes for 30 years. This property is known or suspected to contain military munitions and explosives of concern (e.g., unexploded ordnance) and therefore may present an explosive hazard. Update (Dec. 5, 2017): We have changed the source of the installation cost data after being notified by the Department of Defense that they erroneously reported their own cost figures on the DERP website. We are now displaying the costs the department says are the most accurate available, from the Pentagon’s DERP database that we received in a FOIA request.

Note: The risk level of a site refers to a relative risk assessment made by the DOD to prioritize the cleanup of sites.

Data: All data comes from the Defense Environmental Restoration Program and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and will be released soon at the ProPublica Data Store. Read our methodology »
