The former Turner Air Force Base consisted of 2500 acres of property that is currently operated as an industrial and business park. This property is owned by the city of Albany and several private industries. The site is bounded by the Flint River to the north, Turner Field Road to the west, McCollum Drive to the east, and Georgia Highway 300 to the south. Currently, 1700 of the 2500 acres are leased to a large industrial facility, with other agencies, businesses and light industry occupying the remainder of the site. Response Complete
We haven't independently confirmed the location of every site. If you notice a site placed at the incorrect location, please contact us.
Not all sites in the DOD data include location information, so there may be sites listed below that are missing from the map. The risk level of a site refers to a relative risk assessment made by the DOD to prioritize the cleanup of sites.
6 Active Sites
Sites where military cleanup actions are still ongoing. The risk level of a site refers to a relative risk assessment made by the DOD, which prioritizes the cleanup of sites that pose greatest threat to safety, human health, and the environment.

Contaminated Areas
Groundwater: High Risk
Contaminants are present and are being transported in the surficial aquifer. The vertical extent of contamination is unknown. Nearby wells are drawing water from a deeper aquifer than the one that is contaminated; however, it is not known if the two aquifers are hydrologically connected.
Contaminants: sec-Butylbenzene 8.2 ug/L n-Butylbenzene 9.9 ug/L Chloroform 14.4 ug/L 1,3,5-Trimethylbenzene 29.0 ug/L Cadmium and compounds 30.0 ug/L 1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene 32.0 ug/L Cumene (isopropylbenzene) 40.0 ug/L 2-Methylnaphthalene 70.0 ug/L Xylenes 100.0 ug/L Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) 111.0 ug/L Lead 270.0 ug/L Naphthalene 840.0 ug/L Toluene 2370.0 ug/L 1,2-Dichlorobenzene 2520.0 ug/L 1,4-Dichlorobenzene 3220.0 ug/L Ethylbenzene 3300.0 ug/L 1,3-Dichlorobenzene 4820.0 ug/L Benzene 33000.0 ug/L
Soil: High Risk
Contaminants have leached into the surficial aquifer, below which is an active groundwater source. Contaminants without benchmarks were also detected. Site workers have access to contamnated soil although potential adverse effects are minimal at the soil concentrations identified.

Contaminants: DDT 0.026 mg/kg DDE 0.06 mg/kg Chlordane 0.09 mg/kg DDD 0.17 mg/kg Arsenic 33.0 mg/kg
Soil: High Risk
Contamination is present at an exposure point and is leaching to groundwater. On-site workers and visitors could potentially be exposed.

Update (Dec. 5, 2017): We have changed the source of the installation cost data after being notified by the Department of Defense that they erroneously reported their own cost figures on the DERP website. We are now displaying the costs the department says are the most accurate available, from the Pentagon’s DERP database that we received in a FOIA request.
Note: The risk level of a site refers to a relative risk assessment made by the DOD to prioritize the cleanup of sites.
Data: All data comes from the Defense Environmental Restoration Program and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and will be released soon at the ProPublica Data Store. Read our methodology »
