Groundwater: Medium Risk
Based on the 2005 RI, groundwater contaminants have migrated approximately 300 feet from the source area. Groundwater on base is not used as a potable water source. Impacts to the nearby wetland appear to be limited.
Contaminants: Chloroform 0.32 ug/L 1,2-Dichloroethane (EDC) 7.31 ug/L Arsenic 36.0 ug/L Vinyl Chloride 86.86 ug/L Trichloroethylene (TCE) 186.0 ug/L Benzene 310.97 ug/L cis-1,2-Dichloroethylene 997.88 ug/L Manganese and compounds 3156.77 ug/L
Soil: Medium Risk
There is soil containment and it is susceptible to soil and water erosion. The soil beneath the aircraft mockup appears to have impacted the groundwater. Site is located near a munitions storage area that is currently being used and the site has access restrictions to all base personnel except those individuals that have security clearance for that area.
Contaminants: Dieldrin 0.0002999 mg/kg BHC 0.00215 mg/kg Benzene 0.0031882000000000004 mg/kg Arsenic 0.01586 mg/kg Manganese and compounds 13.98928 mg/kg
Sediment (Fresh): Low Risk
Sediment could potentially migrate with a heavy rain event or flooding. There are limited receptors, such as turtles, near the storm sewer outfalls.
Contaminants: Lindane 1.17e-05 mg/kg Dieldrin 2.29e-05 mg/kg
Sediment (Human): Low Risk
Sediment could potentially migrate with a heavy rain event or flooding. There is limited access since site is located entirely on base and is near the munitions storage area which has restricted access.
Contaminants: Lindane 1.17e-05 mg/kg Dieldrin 2.29e-05 mg/kg
Surface Water: Low Risk
Metals are detected in surface water near the site; however, the samples were collected from a downgradient north storm sewer outlet. Therefore these is not a clear correlation between groundwater contaminants and surface water detections. There is limited access to surface water since it is located on base and near the munitions storage area which has restricted access.
Contaminants: Arsenic 15.3 ug/L Antimony and compounds 17.0 ug/L
Surface Water (Fresh): Low Risk
Metals are detected in surface water near the site; however, the samples were collected from a downgradient north storm sewer outlet. Therefore these is not a clear correlation between groundwater contaminants and surface water detections. There are no endangered or threatened species located on Scott AFB. There are potential ecological receptors such as fish and benthic organisms.

The soil at this site is covered by asphalt surface for >80% of the site. This limits rain water infiltration and potential migration. Silty clay at the site also inhibits the migration of contaminants. The asphalt surface works as an engineered barrier to receptors resulting in limited scenarios where contact with contaminants would be expected. The only receptor in the current land use scenario is the construction worker scenario.

Sediment (Human): Low Risk
The analytical data confirms contamination in the sediment. However, the eco risk assessment conducted as part of the Phase III RI determined that the site and north drainage ditch do not provide a suitable habitat for terrestrial or aquatic communities. There is limited potential for receptors to come into contact with the sediments since the drainage ditch is concrete lined and not suitable for recreation.
Contaminants: Benzo(a)Pyrene 0.00027600000000000004 mg/kg
Soil: Low Risk
The COC at the site is arsenic since it exceeded the Illinois EPA residential criteria at one sampling location. Arsenic sorbs strongly to soil and is unlikely to migrate from the site. The grass and asphalt cover limits the potential for receptors to have access to the contaminated soil.

Update (Dec. 5, 2017): We have changed the source of the installation cost data after being notified by the Department of Defense that they erroneously reported their own cost figures on the DERP website. We are now displaying the costs the department says are the most accurate available, from the Pentagon’s DERP database that we received in a FOIA request.
Note: The risk level of a site refers to a relative risk assessment made by the DOD to prioritize the cleanup of sites.
Data: All data comes from the Defense Environmental Restoration Program and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and will be released soon at the ProPublica Data Store. Read our methodology »
