The former Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot Annex is located approximately 15 miles southeast of downtown Boston, Massachusetts, in Plymouth and Norfolk Counties. The property is located in the vicinity of 42° 13' 9" North, 70° 51' 00" West within... see more » The former Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot Annex is located approximately 15 miles southeast of downtown Boston, Massachusetts, in Plymouth and Norfolk Counties. The property is located in the vicinity of 42° 13' 9" North, 70° 51' 00" West within US. EPA Region 1, Massachusetts Congressional District 10, and zip codes 02043, 02025, 02055, and 02061.The property consisting of 3,747.63 acres fee, was acquired by the Navy in October 1941 through condemnation. In 1967, GSA conveyed 2,991.35 acres fee to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for public park and recreation purposes, reserving easements over 17.34 acres for access and utilities. In September 1971 some 756.28 acres fee and the 17.34 acres easement were transferred to the Army for use as Reserve Training Center (D01MA0444--). Late in 1982 the Army Reserve mission ended and in August 1983 the site, consisting of 767.39 acres fee and 17.34 acres easement was reported as excess to GSA. After investigating environmental conditions, GSA withdrew 125 acres fee and 9.68 acre easement from excess and returned them, along with further 2.865 acres easement for access and utilities, to the Army for environmental remediation (to be disposed under BRAC 95). The remaining 642.39 acres fee and 7.66 acres easement were conveyed to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in September 1986 exclusively for public park and recreation purposes, and the land is used as part of Wompatuck State Park.
