CENED believes the United States purchased leasehold in the three Weepecket Islands in the early 1940s from the Naushon Island Forbes Land Trust. The acreage is not known; however according to World War II records for the First Naval District, the southernmost islet to the northeast of the largest Weepecket Island was used as the center point of a 250-yard bombing radius for practice bombing. The area of the target islet is estimated to be 0.1 acre. CENED believes that the site was not under other than DOD control during the period of DOD use. CENED believes that sometime in the 1950s or 1960s the lease was terminated. The language of the lease document is not known. The Weepecket Islands are currently owned by the Forbes Naushon Island Land Trust. (Source: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) « see less

Update (Dec. 5, 2017): We have changed the source of the installation cost data after being notified by the Department of Defense that they erroneously reported their own cost figures on the DERP website. We are now displaying the costs the department says are the most accurate available, from the Pentagon’s DERP database that we received in a FOIA request.

Note: The risk level of a site refers to a relative risk assessment made by the DOD to prioritize the cleanup of sites.
