Project Description

Construct 5 gabion basket retaining walls to protect homes, land and potable water sources in Mirzaka from seasonal flash flooding

Project Goals

To protect 26 hectares of land, a spring, shops, homes, a madrassa, and potable water for more than 1750 people in Mirzaka. An additional wall in the bazaar will keep the Mirzaka bazaar functioning during floods, and protect the stores and inventories of storeowners. In addition, these walls will protect 36,000 m2 of land and the homes of 20 families. Comments: The community has requested these projects from the RRD, but the director does not have the resources to do these walls.

The following 4 walls are to be constructed:

1. Khalilan Bagcha WC45678 36664 -- $22,000

Some farm land is already destroyed. Another 12 hectares (1200m2) of land are still under threat of flooding. A 139m gabion wall will be used to put the river back on its correct course to protect this land.

2. Chongee Baghcha WC45400 36483 -- $34,500

This is a spring that has been washed out by past flooding. The spring provides water for 650m2 of agriculture land and provides potable water for nearby villagers. This project includes digging of an irrigation canal supported by masonry on either side with a gabion wall to support the drainage direction.

3. Chorakee WC 49051 36726 -- $26,500

The Chorakee Karez provides water for 8 hectares of agricultural farm land and potable water for 200 families (1750 individuals). During the flood season, embankment walls are washed away and flood waters fill the karez with contaminated water and debris, clogging the karez and damaging spargas. A 190m gabion wall will be constructed to protect the karez from overflow flooding and support the embankment.

4. Madrassa WC 44068 35176 -- $11,200

The Madrassa (center of educational excellence) is to the west of the Mirzaka bazaar and near the main road. During the flood season, the Madrassa, as well as some shops, are in danger of flood damage when the river overflows. A 145m gabion wall will be constructed to keep flood waters in the river and protect the Madrassa, road, and shops.

5. Bazaar WC 45089 36380 -- $60,000

The Mirzaka bazaar is under constant threat from floods that demolish the bazaar and nearby homes and farmland. One wall will protect the down side of the road which has been washed out many times. It will protect about 36,000m2 of land and the homes of 20 families.

The upside of the road was washed out by a flood as recently as last year. This wall will protect 30 shops, a clinic and more farmland.
