Conflict of Interest
Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Therabiologics, Inc.
Equity Interest - Publicly traded entity (e.g., stock, stock option, or other ownership interest)
Therabiologics, Inc. is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing human neural stem cell (NSC)-mediated cancer therapies. Therabiologics’ TBX NSC platform has been engineered to deliver a diverse range of potent anti-cancer agents selectively to invasive cancer sites in order to maximize therapeutic concentrations at the disease target and minimize off target toxicities. Dr. Aboody is a Principal Investigator on the funded research grant, a Phase I study of NSC-based therapy in patients with recurrent high grade gliomas. Given the similarities between the company’s product development and the aims of the grant, the interest was determined to be related.
A Phase I Study of Intracranially Administered Carboxylesterase-Expressing Neural Stem Cells in Combination with Intravenous Irinotecan in Patients with Recurrent High Grade Gliomas
Neural stem cells (NSCs) may provide a safe, effective way to deliver cancer-killing drugs to brain tumors because of their natural ability to home to tumor cell throughout the brain. This cancer-targeting property of NSCs can be harnessed by modifying the NSCs to deliver high concentrations of powerful chemotherapies to invasive tumor sites while reducing toxicity to healthy tissues and decreasing side effects. Based on compelling preclinical data, we propose to perform a phase I study of this NSC-based therapy in patients with recurrent high grade gliomas.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.
Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.
ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
