I-PASS Patient Safety Institute, Inc.

The I-PASS Institute is a training/consulting company, to help academic medical centers interested in hospital-wide implementation of I-PASS to improve handoffs and the safety of patient care. The I-PASS program itself is freely available to medical centers, but typically academic medical centers require further support to successfully implement I-PASS. The I-PASS Institute was founded to help disseminate an improvement process developed through research led by Dr. Landrigan and others at Boston Children's Hospital. It is restricted to training and implementation activities; it does not fund or participate in research. Dr. Landrigan intends to provide consulting services to the Company. Dr. Landrigan, as an Investigator in the study will be involved in all aspects of the research. The purpose of this Study is to study adaptation and implementation of the I-PASS program at a program level across adult and pediatric inpatient services, but it does not involve studying any of the products developed by the company. No funds from the research support the company, nor are any company products being used in the research. However, the outcome of the research may indirectly affect the Company.
Mentored Implementation of I-PASS for Better Handoffs and Safer Care
Communication failures are a leading cause of serious errors in hospitals. We have developed 'I-PASS,' a bundle of evidence-based handoff practices and tools that decrease miscommunications; in a nine-center study, we found that errors that harmed patients decreased 34% following implementation of I-PASS, and near misses decreased 26%. We propose to implement I-PASS in 32 adult and pediatric hospitals through the Society of Hospital Medicine's award-winning Mentored Implementation program.
