The Boston University-UCLA Lung Cancer Biomarker Development Lab
PROJECT NARRATIVE In patients who are eligible for lung cancer screening, the majority of lung cancer diagnoses are made in intermediate size lung nodules but the vast majority of nodules of this size are benign. As it is currently not possible to determine which are cancerous without using invasive and expensive tests, we seek to develop tests for detecting cancerous nodules non-invasively based on their detailed appearance, their effects on the molecular biology of the airway and the presence of cancer-associated molecules in the blood. We will then determine the utility of these tests in avoiding more invasive tests in patients whose nodules are not cancerous.
