Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. Dr. Gale owns private equity in the above mentioned interest that is specialized in developing contrasts for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This grant will use and develop a new MRI contrast that is manganese based, an alternative to MRI contrasts that contain Gadolinium. In addition, the IP resulting from research under this grant will be licensed to the company. Based on the magnitude of this financial interest and the close connection between the company's interests and the research, the financial interest could directly and significantly affect the design, conduct, or reporting of the research.

Translation of basic observations into clinical practice is limited by the resources needed for development, inadequate experience of academic investigators, and the discovery-focused academic culture. Building an academic infrastructure that facilitates translation by promoting development is an important goal to ensure the successful translation of research into benefit for patients and society.
