The research seeks to design and develop a system that (1) assists in locating lung nodules in deform/deflated lungs, (2) uses machine-learning algorithms to determine the optimal resection margin, and (3) tracks the surgical stapling device for accurately excising the nodule and preserving healthy lung function. The company is developing a medical device to measure the distance of tumor margins from the cutting edge to inform surgeons during surgery. This project builds on the anchoring IP licensed to Navigation Sciences and develops the next generation in navigation to assistance surgeons in excisions.

Lung Navigation System for Localizing and Resecting Nodules

Project Narrative ! The proposed research is significant since it addresses an important problem, which potentially affects several thousand patients each year, of accurately localizing and resecting lung nodules while preserving healthy lung function. The research is innovative since it builds on state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms, navigation systems and augmented reality methods to accurately diagnose and localize the nodule in presence of significant tissue deformation. !

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
