Conflict of Interest
Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

The research seeks to demonstrate the efficacy of a pharmacologic treatment as an alternative to CPAP for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Philips markets CPAP and BiPap therapy devices, masks, and other devices likely used in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). If successful, a portion of the OSA patient population will still require CPAP devices for therapy, but a subset of the OSA patient population would have an alternate therapy to CPAP providing competition to the company. Dr. Bakker' is employed by Philips Respironics.
A Novel Pharmacological Therapy for Obstructive Sleep Apnea
PROJECT NARRATIVE Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious health concern that is inadequately treated with existing therapies, and there is no pharmacological therapy available. The proposed research will advance knowledge through 1.) test- ing repeated-dose efficacy and tolerance of a highly-promising pharmacological therapy involving a combina- tion of agents to increase pharyngeal muscle responsiveness (~75% improvement in severity in preliminary da- ta), 2.) providing a better understanding of the mechanisms of action, and 3.) providing a means to identify pa- tients who may benefit most.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.
