This research project will characterize a specific metabolic state highly reminiscent of the physiology of cancer cells (aerobic glycolysis or Warburg effect) that were identified in the precursors of muscles and vertebrae. The work is expected to shed light on the origin of this peculiar metabolism in cancer cells and will also help understand the cause of vertebral column defects in diseases such as congenital scoliosis. Dr. Pourquié is a co-founder of and has an equity interest in Anagenesis Biotechnologies. He also receives consulting income from the company. The protocols used to differentiate ES cells to the paraxial mesoderm mentioned in the grant are patented and licensed to Anagenesis. Potential improvements of the differentiation of ES cells to the paraxial mesoderm lineage may be of interest to the company and the company may potentially benefit from the results of the research. Given that Dr. Pourquié has a significant financial interest in the company, the COI review panel concluded that the financial interest in Anagenesis creates a potential conflict of interest (COI) with the research.
