Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Dr. Cremer is the founder of Basic Health International. Basic Health International’s mission is to eradicate cervical cancer globally. The Cleveland Clinic Innovation Management and Conflict of Interest Committee found that Dr. Cremer has a Significant Financial Interest (SFI) in Basic Health International since she makes more than (b)(4) from BHI and that the SFI is related to the research. The SFI itself is unlikely to be affected, since BHI is committed to the principle that “compensation must be reasonable, deliberated, at arm’s length and non-excessive”. However, the SFI is an entity whose financial interest could be affected by way of increased donations should the research be successful. The research relates to better cervical cancer care and screening in a low resource setting. The Committee also determined that the SFI could directly and significantly affect the design, conduct or reporting of the research since Dr. Cremer as principal investigator is responsible for the overall design, conduct and reporting of the research.

CryoPen: An Innovative Treatment for Cervical Precancer in Low-Resource Setting

Most (90%) cervical cancer occurs in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). Standard treatment for cervical precancer in these settings, nitrous oxide (N2O) - based cryotherapy, can be expensive, difficult to procure, and hard to transport. The public health significance of this application is that we will transform a non-gas based ablative device, the CryoPen(R) Cryosurgical System, into an inexpensive and easily transportable cryotherapy device, specifically for use in LMICs that can be used by any level of health care provider.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
