Dr. Hillman has begun a consultancy with Leica Microsystems; she also is an inventor of SCAPE microscopy technology licensed from Columbia to Leica that relates to microscopy technology used in this study. In light of these facts, Columbia found that Dr. Hillman’s significant financial interest in Leica could affect the design, conduct, or reporting of the research.
Decoding the neural basis of resting-state functional connectivity mapping
Narrative Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) is a technique that detects how regions of the brain are synchronized, forming networks that appear to be important for normal brain function. However, interpreting the meaning of these networks, and using them to diagnose or treat disease requires a better understanding of what they represent in terms of physical connections in the brain, the contributions of different cell types, and how they relate to behavioral state. This project will combine measurements in mice, where information can be gathered over scales from single cells to the whole brain, with human fMRI and measurements during human brain surgery and epilepsy evaluation, to derive improved approaches to acquiring, analyzing and interpreting rs-fMRI data in health and disease.
