Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Dr. Washington owns equity in Alkeus Pharmaceuticals, which has licensed intellectual property that arose from his research and that relates to the subject of investigation in this R01. The success of this analysis may impact the value of the licensed IP, which may be of benefit to the company. In light of these facts, the Institution has determined that Dr. Washington’s significant financial interest could conflict with the research.
