Conflict of Interest
Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Varian Medical Systems
Other : Inventor’s share of license/royalty fees paid through Columbia
Dr. Schwartz is entitled to receive an inventor’s share of license fees and royalties through a license from Columbia University to Varian. Columbia’s Policy on Financial Conflicts of Interest and Research includes royalties above $5,000, even if received through the University, in the definition of “significant financial interest.” Dr. Schwartz received payments in the (b)(4) range from Varian within the past 12 months. Dr. Schwartz continues to conduct research that relates to the lung tumor segmentation algorithm covered by the license. In light of these facts, Columbia has determined that the outcome of this research could affect the value of the license and Dr. Schwartz’s financial interest, and that the design, conduct, and/or reporting of this research could be affected by this financial interest. Columbia's FCOI Committee found the conflict posed a low risk of bias to this grant given multiple factors, including the role of the algorithm licensed to Varian solely as a tool and the limited likelihood that the outcome of the study will drive further royalties.
Integrating Radiomics into S0819 and Lung-MAP, Biomarker Driven Clinical Trials for Lung Cancer
This work will improve drug discovery for promising new classes of therapies by creating innovative response criteria based on volumetric and radiomics signatures developed with prior support by the QIN and now validated in two large multi-site clinical trials studying multiple therapeutic options in the most important histologic types of lung cancer and most commonly used imaging modality, CT. Results are expected to be applied to other tumor types and help match patients to the treatment that works best for them.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.
Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.
