Dig Into University Researchers' Outside Income and Conflicts of Interest
Published Dec. 6, 2019
This database was last updated in December 2019 and should only be used as a historical snapshot. There may be new or amended records not reflected here.
Conflict of Interest
Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

KnackTime Interactive, Inc.
Equity Interest - Non-publicly traded entity ( e.g., stock, stock option, or other ownership interest)
The focus of this award is to develop and test smokeSCREEN, an electronic prototype of an evidence based videogame intervention, targeting cigarette smoking prevention among young adolescents. Because KnackTime Interactive, Inc. was created to provide a mechanism for marketing and distribution of evidence-based video game interventions targeting health and social good in youth and young adults, the results of this research are directly related to the business interests of KnackTime Interactive, Inc. Therefore, Yale’s COI Committee determined that the outcomes of this research could directly and significantly affect the value of Dr. Fiellin’s financial interests in the company.
Dr. Fiellin is also the inventor of intellectual property (the “Aspirational Avatar”) that may be licensed to KnackTime Interactive, Inc., and which could be enhanced by this research. Although Yale did not treat this IP in and of itself as a significant financial interest (i.e., Dr. Fiellin did not receive any reportable payments related to this intellectual property during the 12 months preceding her disclosure; and if she had, royalties received from the investigator’s institution are excluded from the PHS definition of a significant financial interest), Yale’s COI Committee did take these IP rights into consideration as one of the factors in determining whether or not a conflict of interest exists with this research.
Technology-based Treatments for Substance Use Disorders
Empirically supported, technology-based interventions (e.g., computer, web, mobile devices) targeting substance abuse and HIV enable widespread reach of evidence-based care and offer the potential to have a marked public health impact. The proposed unique Center will serve as a national resource for researchers, technologists, consumers, service providers, service payors, and policy makers interested in the development, evaluation, dissemination and implementation of technology-based behavioral interventions for substance abuse and related issues.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.
Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.
ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
