This project, a subcontract from IU to Purdue, entitled “Portable assay platform for rapid detection of malarial pathogens” aims to combine nucleic acid based amplification of the malaria parasite, Plasmodium, with smart phone enabled particle diffusometry. Preliminary data shows that Plasmodium species can be detected using molecular diagnostic techniques (LAMP DNA detection) and that particle diffusometry is a highly sensitive readout platform. The investigators will combine these two techniques and create an integrated diagnostic platform for ultra-sensitive, rapid detection of malaria infection and then validate this technology using retrospective patient blood samples collected in Uganda in collaboration with Dr. Chandy John at IUSM.
OmniVis, Inc. is a new start-up company that aims to increase the efficiency of infectious disease monitoring and response by providing medical workers with rapid, accurate diagnosis at point-of-care. The PI and Co-PI on this project at Purdue, Profs. Kinser-Ursem and J. Linnes, are co-founders of OmniVis, Inc. Purdue will sub-contract to OmniVis, Inc. for a part of this project that includes the quantitative algorithm development

PROJECT NARRATIVE The Indiana CTSI 3.0 will not only expand translational research across the state, but also address some of the major community health issues faced by Indiana, and the nation. We will find novel approaches to integrating `precision medicine' and `population health', embrace the vision to train a new breed of research workforce skilled in team science and community engagement, and both deepen and expand the integration of research in our health systems.
