Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Dr. Fischl is a co-founder of CorticoMetrics, LLC. The company is developing “FreeSurfer” software for diagnosing a specific type of epileptic focus. FreeSurfer is an open source program developed by Fischl that uses automated computational processes to construct and analyze the cortical surface, particularly in terms of thickness and area. It initially finds white matter surface by classifying brain tissue into its components in voxel-space then locating the white/gray matter boundary, and then fits a smooth WMS deformable model. Once the white matter surface is produced, the program then expands a deformable surface toward the pial surface. This research grant is focused on developing anatomical modeling tools and the results could potentially enhance the capabilities of the FreeSurfer software. The Co-Chairs of Partners HealthCare Conflicts of Interest Committee evaluated the financial interest in connection with this research and determined that, based on the nature of the financial interest and the close connection between the company's interests and the research, the financial interest could directly and significantly affect the design, conduct, or reporting of the research.

Listed Research Project
Software Tools for Automated Modeling of White Matter Fascicles from Diffusion MR

Connectivity tools are difficult for clinicians and researchers to use as they require manual interventions to generate reliable tract models. Automation will facilitate the analysis of connectivity in disorders such as schizophrenia, AD, autism and aging for subtle effects that occur early in brain disorders.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
