Conflict of Interest
Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Pascall Systems, Inc.
Equity Interest - Non-publicly traded entity ( e.g., stock, stock option, or other ownership interest)
Dr. Purdon is a co-founder of Pascall Systems, Inc. and he owns equity in the privately held company. The company is developing closed-loop physiological control technologies for anesthesia. Dr. Purdon is an inventor of an algorithm that is expected to be licensed to the company. The research grant seeks to understand how the actions of the anesthetics at specific molecular targets and neural circuits produce the oscillatory dynamics (EEG rhythms, changes in LFPs and neural spiking activity) that are likely a primary common mechanism through which anesthetics create altered states of arousal. The company could therefore have an interest in the results of the research. The institution determined that, based on the close connection between the company's interests and the research, the financial interest could directly and significantly affect the design, conduct, or reporting of the research.
Integrated Systems Neuroscience Studies of Anaesthesia
General anesthesia is a fascinating man-made, neurophysiological phenomenon that has been developed empirically over many years to enable safe and humane performance of surgical and non-surgical procedures. Despite its use for nearly 170 years, and the fact that today it is administered daily to 60,000 patients in the United States, the mechanisms for how anesthetics act in the brain to create the states of anesthesia are not well understood. In this program project entitled, Integrated Systems Neuroscience Studies of Anesthesia, we will conduct a set of integrated human, non-human primate, rodent, and mathematical modeling studies to decipher the neurophysiological mechanisms of the four most commonly used anesthetic drugs; propofol, sevoflurane, dexmedetomidine, and ketamine.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.
Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.
ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
