Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Disclosed Conflict of Interest with

Riva Biotarget, Inc.

Disclosed Value
Listed Reason
Equity Interest - Non-publicly traded entity ( e.g., stock, stock option, or other ownership interest)

Dr. He is a Co-Founder and has a Scientific Advisory role and (b)(4) ownership of Riva Biotarget, Inc. The company was established 1/5/2018 to develop novel biomarkers, targeted therapies, and immunotherapies for cancer. Current value, (b)(4). Continued investment depends on benchmarks, e.g., successful development of kit for immunochemistry, or diagnostic kits.

Intellectual property: The biomarker TDRD1 was developed and patented at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). A licensing arrangement is in pending between BCM and the faculty startup Riva Biotarget, Inc.

Related Research. R01 grant (R01 CA211861 The Germ Cell Gene TDRD1 as a Novel Prostate Cancer Biomarker) transferred from BCM.
Aims 1-2 conducted at BCM. Concerns diagnostic and prognostic value of the biomarker and relevant to potential commercialization. Dr He will not be involved in conduct of these aims, or analysis.
Dr. He’s research staff with immune-histochemistry expertise may at some point be asked to provide assistance to BCM core staff to ‘optimize’ conditions if that expertise is not available at BCM.
Aim 3: conducted at HMRI by Dr. He: exploring potential oncogene. Will involve animal work to test oncogene functioning. Per Dr. He, this is not related to the patent. It is a mechanistic, basic science study. No downstream commercialization expected.

The grant was transferred from BCM to Houston Methodist. The Conflict of Interest Committee has determined that the potential commercialization of TDRD1, and the relationship of the PI, Dr. He to Riva Biotarget is a financial conflict of interest.

Listed Research Project
The Germ Cell Gene TDRD1 as a Novel Prostate Cancer Biomarker

In our preliminary study, we have found a new prostate cancer gene TDRD1. In this proposal, we will evaluate its potential as a novel prostate cancer diagnostic and prognostic biomarker, and also investigate its role in prostate cancer development. Our results could be quickly translated into a new tool for prostate cancer diagnosis and/or prognosis prediction in the clinic.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
