Conflict of Interest
Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Transplant Genomics
Salary not from the awardee Institution
The research is related to the focus of an entity in which Professor Friedewald has significant financial interests. Professor Abecassis is a founder of Transplant Genomics (TGI) and holds equity interests in this non-publicly-traded entity.
TGI’s objective is to discover robust molecular signatures indicative of individual patient graft status, prognosis or response to specific immunosuppressant regimens to complement existing immunohistological analysis, which will enable precise patient-centric therapeutic intervention and improved transplant outcomes.
This research focusing on biomarker profiling in the management of transplant patients aims to integrate molecular diagnostics into clinical practice, demonstrating their value in the management of patients following kidney transplantation (KT).
This entity has licensing agreements and exclusive options to intellectual property developed in this area of research. The close intersection of this research and Professor Friedewald’s TGI interests result in the perception of a conflict of interest in this area of research that should be managed.
Effectiveness, Safety and Value of Integrating Molecular Diagnostics into the Post-Transplant Management of Kidney Transplant Recipients - The Next Frontier of Biomarker Research
The promise of precision medicine will be achieved when molecular diagnostics detect actionable differences operating in individual patients early enough to inform therapy and change clinical outcomes. Long-term graft outcomes following kidney transplantation (KT) have not improved in 3 decades, despite better immunosuppression (IS), lower rates of acute rejection, and improved short- and medium-term clinical outcomes. We propose a randomized clinical trial that will demonstrate the effectiveness, safety and value of integrating predictive molecular biomarkers into post-KT clinical practice and management, improving long- term outcomes, and providing novel mechanistic insights into chronic rejection and poor long-term outcomes.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.
Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.
ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
