Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Dr. Lewis holds intellectual property rights associated with a patent application. This patent application (filed in May 2018) is for a novel method of combining data from current sequences that are usually acquired in common clinical MRI studies. The data supporting the application show that the method provides a robust way to detect brain changes that occur in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease. The inventors believe that the most efficient way of disseminating the method will be as part of existing software packages that MRI manufacturers provide. After the patent was filed, a manuscript describing the approach was submitted.

Although the Intellectual Property rights are held with Penn State Research Foundation (associated with the awardee institution), Penn State University policy does not exclude Penn State-owned intellectual property from the definition of Significant Financial Interest. Additionally, although there has been no revenue from the intellectual property, our institution reviews any intellectual property rights, regardless of value, if related to human subjects research.

During this specific project, MRI data will be collected, which could potentially help to refine the algorithm the inventors are developing to diagnose Parkinson’s disease and monitor disease progression, and may assist in differentiating these conditions early in the disease. Thus, the data collected under this study could potentially affect the value of the intellectual property rights.

Discovery of Multimodal Biomarkers for Parkinsonian Syndromes, Their Progression, and Pathological Relevance

Project Narrative A lack of biomarkers for differentiating Parkinson?s disease (PD) from a number of similar conditions such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) (often referred to as atypical parkinsonism), has hindered clinical practice, and basic and translational research. Efforts from many groups including ours have shown that multimodal brain MRI and biofluid measurements of misfolded ?-synuclein and tau proteins have great potential for differentiating these similar conditions by reflecting both the pathoetiological process and patterns of changes associated with different parkinsonian syndromes. Leveraging a unique existing cohort, dataset, and banked biofluid, and based on strong pilot data, the current study aims to determine the ability of these ?multi-domain biomarkers? in discriminating these similar clinical syndromes, capturing the distinctive pattern of pathological changes associated with each, and tracking their progression. If successful, the proposed studies, in the near future, will deliver the most recent biomarker advances to clinical practice and translational research, and facilitate the basic understanding of this group of diseases.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
