Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

RBHS-ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON MEDIC

Dr. Mouradian is inventor of a patent (together with the grant PI Dr. Junn) entitled RNA targeting in alpha-synucleinopathies. The patent has not been licensed and does not have any IP value at this time. While the current grant is sponsored by NIH, the subject matter of the patent and the grant overlap. Hence it is reasonable to conclude that success with the experiments outlined in the grant application may add value to the IP and enhance the financial outcome for both inventors. Although it is early in the discovery phase of this work, the ICOIC concluded that the perception of a conflict of interest does exist.

Alpha-Synuclein Regulation by microRNAs

Parkinson's disease and related progressive disorders of the brain have abnormal accumulation of a protein called alpha-synuclein in brain cells. The amount of this protein is critical in promoting its accumulation, which is believed to be harmful to these cells. Therefore, learning what controls the amount of this protein will help devise new treatments of these diseases. This project will study a new mechanism that controls alpha-synuclein levels.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
