Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Rochester institute of Technology

Disclosed Value
Listed Reason
Intellectual property rights (e.g., royalties, patents, copyrights) not from the awardee Institution

(1) Dr. Gaborski's equity interest in (b)(4) a non public company is related scientifically to the project goals of developing improved cellular barrier models as well as researching membrane technologies that will advance the knowledge in these fields. Since (b)(4) is a manufacturer of ultrathin porous membranes that can be utilized for cell culture research and benefit from this research, RIT and Dr. Gaborski determined this project may benefit the company and affect the value of its shares. (2) As Dr. Gaborski has inventor or co-inventor payment rights for three patents involving ultrathin porous membranes that are exclusively licensed to (b)(4) by his Ph.D. alma mater, the intellectual property rights value of these patents may be influenced by the outcome of this research project involving related cell culture studies.

Listed Research Project
Transparent Ultrathin Nanomembranes for Barrier Cell Models and Novel Co-Culture Systems

Narrative The overall aim of this research program is to develop optically transparent nanomembranes to enable improved in vitro tissue models. These models will aid in drug candidate screening as well as improve our understanding of cellular interactions during tissue development.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
