TMAO and Initiation, Extent, and Clinical Onset of Atherosclerotic CVD
Narrative Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is a metabolite of L-carnitine and lecithin, nutrients present in red meat, eggs, chicken, milk, and fish. In basic experimental studies, TMAO promotes atherosclerosis of the blood vessels; yet, its relevance to cardiovascular risk in humans is not well established. This research will provide critical evidence on how TMAO relates to initiation, extent, and onset of atherosclerosis and clinical cardiovascular events in two independent, large, well-established, prospective community-based US cohort studies: the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and the Cardiovascular Health Study.
