The scope of work for this project focuses on the well-being of infants released from the NICU.at 5 different health care organizations. The research focuses on understanding their microbiome and promoting shifts in the microbiome that could lead to improved understanding of health disparities across differing socio-economic status and enable interventions to shift infant neuro developmental trajectories in innovative ways. The project has utilized the biocollector device as a tool to aid in collection of fecal samples, but the device is not being analyzed, evaluated or tested under this project in any way. The kit is produced and sold by BioCollective LLC.
The decision to purchase the biocollective kits for use in this project was a decision made by Erika Claud. She stated that she was aware the the kits were made by a company Dr. Gilbert was associated with but that had no bearing on the decision to purchase the kits. Dr. Claud wanted to use these kits because there are no other kits available for the collection of a full fecal sample. Dr. Gilbert recused himself from the decision to purchase the kits, approving the purchase or procuring the kits.
The microbiome as a potential mediator of socio-economic disparities in preterm infant neurodevelopmental trajectories from NICU discharge to school age
Project Narrative Preterm infants are at risk for poor neurodevelopmental outcome due to their degree of prematurity, hospital course, and home environment. This proposal will study the changes in the bacterial colonization patterns of the infants in the context of their home environment to identify a potentially modifiable factor that may influence brain development and thus school readiness for these vulnerable infants.
