sEcad as a novel target and therapy for IGF-1R expressing tumors
PROJECT NARRATIVE Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, with 1.7 million new cases in 2012 worldwide. Soluble E- cadherin, a small protein produced by cancer cells in large quantities, appears to enhance cancer growth and expansion. In this R01 grant, we will study the function of soluble E-cadherin in breast cancer development and how it binds to a cancer growth promoting receptor IGF-1R. Additionally, we will test the effectiveness of a new therapy we developed against this soluble fragment in human cells and mouse models of breast cancer so as to understand whether IGF-1R is involved. We believe that our discovery will lead to a new therapy for human breast cancer.
