Sperm Capacitation Technologies Inc.

Professor Salicioni and her spouse, Professor Visconti, have launched a start-up company based upon intellectual property developed in the Visconti laboratory at UMass Amherst and funded by external and internal sources. The intellectual property forming the basis for the company relates to increasing sperm capacitation to enhance and improve sperm fertility. Professors Visconti and Salicioni and the University agree that the project entitled "Crosstalk of Calcium and other pathways in capacitation" is related to the technology of interest to (and forming the basis for) the start-up, SCT (Sperm Capacitation Technologies, Inc.), and the project is therefore related to the outside financial interest comprising ownership of the start-up company. Although at this time the company has no revenues or assets, it has executed/will execute a license agreement or license option for UMass Amherst intellectual property, allowing the company to begin seeking capital investment.
Crosstalk of Calcium and other pathways in capacitation
Difficulties in earlier efforts to fertilize mammalian eggs in vitro were due mainly to a lack of comprehension of sperm physiology. This proposal is aimed to understand the molecular basis of sperm capacitation with emphasis in the regulation of the crosstalk between Ca2+ homeostasis and other signaling pathways in sperm. Accomplishment of these goals will provide tools for improving current Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) methods and to identify novel contraceptive targets.
