Inhibiting Bcl-2-regulated intestinal fibrosis in models of Crohn’s Disease
Two-thirds of patients with Crohn's disease will require surgery to remove scarred and obstructed fibrotic intestine, but there are currently no medical therapies for intestinal fibrosis in Crohn's disease. We propose to translate the growing basic science understanding of intestinal fibrosis into validated gut-specific lead compounds for the safe and effective treatment of intestinal fibrosis that could produce a future ?strictureplasty in a pill?. The proposed project could validate a molecular target for treatment of intestinal fibrosis in Crohn's disease, which will also be relevant to several other forms of organ fibrosis which affect tens of millions of people in the US, including kidney failure, liver cirrhosis, congestive heart failure, scleroderma, and pulmonary fibrosis.
