Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

For this research project, Grant 215220, Dr. Johnson will direct the Genomics Core Team within UO's Microbial Ecology and Theory of Animals Center in Systems Biology (META CSB). The goal of this project is to innovate the tools, experimental approaches, best practices, analytical frameworks, and conceptual models required to describe how host-microbe systems organize, interact, and evolve.

Dr. Johnson developed the sequenced RAD genetic marker approach that will be used to genotype the fish populations and has extensive experience in gene expression studies and Illumina library preparation. It is natural that Dr. Johnson should use his expertise to expand research using a technique that he developed in his lab. However, Dr. Johnson's new business (SNPsaurus) and his equity interest (Floragenex) share in the interest of providing genomic services to commercial customers, and thus would be perceived by an outsider as improperly benefitting his equity interests.

Every human is an ecosystem inhabited by microbial communities that profoundly affect our health. The META CSB will pioneer systems-level studies of the assembly, dynamics, and evolution of host-microbe systems. Our discoveries and innovations will advance knowledge of human diseases with perturbed host associated microbial communities such as inflammatory bowel diseases, diabetes, cancers, and autism.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
