The University of Pittsburgh has entered into an agreement with ALung Technologies, Inc. to option the Modular Extracorporeal Ambulatory Lung Assists Device to the company. The investigator is an inventor on this IP. This IP in an improvement on the Passive Paracorporeal Ambulatory Assist Lung and can be adjusted to be used with children or adults by switching interchangeable components made to fit the patient. Funds from R01HL135482 will be used to fund bench and animal research evaluating and/or developing the Modular Extracorporeal Ambulatory Lung Assists Device intellectual property.
Ambulatory Assist Lung for Children
Public Health Relevance Statement This project will build and test a pediatric artificial lung that can be worn by patients waiting for lung transplantation or lung recovery. Cystic fibrosis (CF), pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary fibrosis have been observed to be the most frequent causes of lung failure in pediatric patients. The incidence of CF is between 1:2500 and 1:3500 each year and 80% of CF patient deaths are related to lung failure. The artificial lung will allow patients to move about in the hospital environment.
