PRESERVATION OF BETA CELL FUNCTION IN PREDIABETES: IGT AND IFG
PROJECT NARRATIVE The prevalence of T2DM (~29.0 million) and IFG/IGT (~86 million) (http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes- basics/statistics, 2016) has increased dramatically over the last 20 years. IGT and IFG are prediabetic states with annual conversion rates to diabetes of 3-11% (mean = 6% per year). In the present grant, we will define the etiologic factors responsible for progressive beta cell failure in IGT and IFG and identify effective interventions that halt the deterioration in beta cell function. If diabetes can be delayed/prevented, this would have enormous impact to prevent the devastating complications associated with T2DM.
