Galveston County Health District
Texas statue requires that each county have a Local Health Authority. The Local Health Authority is responsible for upholding Texas public health laws and promoting public health in Galveston County. The LHA is appointed by the Galveston County Commissioners on the recommendation by the United Board of Health. Duties include overseeing the TB control program, Breast Cancer Screening Program and Child Vaccination. The LHA also is responsible for management of any outbreaks of infectious diseases that occur in Galveston County. The duties of the LHA do not overlap with my duties at UTMB. However, this position provides for closer collaboration between UTMB and the Health Department in the areas of public health and infection control
1-2 hours /week of work are during work hours. The remainder is after hours. In the event of a public health emergency or disaster, the amount of time needed may increase Compensation is on an hourly basis, depending on the actual hours worked. No conflict of interest. The relationship will strengthen ties between the health department and UTMB, resulting in a better health environment for the county The time commitment is minimal at this point. Much of the time spent is after hours. The greater good for the university and the public outweigh any negatives with regard to time.
