Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

The NIH award (R21AI141090-01) focuses on the immunogenicity of a novel live attenuated tuberculosis vaccine. Professor Adel Talaat has a significant financial interest in Pan Genome Systems, Inc. because of his equity interest in the company and his consulting relationship with them. Pan Genome Systems, Inc. develops and delivers novel, patent-protected vaccines and diagnostics. Because Grant R21AI141090-01 and Pan Genome Systems, Inc. are both interested in novel vaccines, the COI Committee recognized there is a nexus between Pan Genome Systems Inc.’s commercial interests and the aims of the NIH award. For these reasons, the relationship is being managed.

An outside activity has a nexus with an individual's research activities if the outside activity arises from, relies upon or is related to the academic expertise that qualifies that individual to participate in federally funded research or human subjects research. The Institution has reasonably determined that the significant financial interest could directly and significantly affect the design, conduct, or reporting of the PHS-funded research and so requires management.

Listed Research Project
Immunogenicity of A Novel Live Attenuated Tuberculosis Vaccine

Tuberculosis or TB (infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis or M. tb) is a world-wide problem that affects one third of the world population, causing nearly 1.4 million deaths/year. The current vaccine available to control TB, M. bovis BCG (BCG), has variable protection levels ranging from 0-80% depending on the vaccinated population, especially among adults. TB constitutes a major health concern for public health authorities in both developing and developed countries. Support from NIH to this project will help to relieve such concerns and could provide novel candidates to control this deadly disease.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
