BRAIN CONNECTIVITY AND THE ROLE OF MYELIN IN AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS
PROJECT NARRATIVE Improved understanding and characterization of the patterns of brain connectivity that underlie autism spectrum disorder, as well as knowledge about factors that influence such relationships is crucial for establishing and guiding effective screening and prevention policies; as well as developing timely interventional studies. Utilizing recent advancements in both quantitative MRI and statistical analysis, the goal of this proposed research is to generate new knowledge about interdependent relationships of structural and functional brain connectivity and to examine the role that myelin has on these relationships. We expect that this detailed analysis of brain connectivity in autism will result in the discovery of new brain imaging phenotypes that reveal new neurobiological mechanisms and further advance our understanding of the neuropathology of autism and its severely impairing clinical manifestations.
