Conflict of Interest
Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

C2N Diagnostics
Other : Licensing through awardee institution
Based on Washington University’s Research COI Policy and the Procedures for Determining and Managing Research Financial Conflicts of Interests, Washington University determined Dr. Bateman’s personal financial relationship with C2N Diagnostics related to the above referenced research creates a financial conflict of interest due to the following reasons:
• Dr. Bateman’s personal financial relationship is directly related to the research because this study is evaluating a technology licensed by C2N Diagnostics.
• Since Dr. Bateman owns equity and will earn royalties from the sale and distribution of the licensed IP, he could directly benefit from the results of the study.
• Dr. Bateman’s role, as described below, could directly affect the research.
While the committees determined financial conflicts of interest exist, they concluded sufficient mechanisms exist to ensure the objectivity and integrity of the research, based on the following reasons:
• Dr. Bateman’s influence over the study is somewhat minimized because the data analysis is blinded and is performed by a team of scientists in medicine.
• Dr. Bateman will not be involved in the collection of data, which will be performed by members of his lab using standardized lab protocols.
• The outcome of the research will not directly lead to a marketable blood test for AD.
• Multiple autonomous individuals oversee the safety of the research participants, including nurses in the Clinical Research Unit (CRU); (b)(6), an impartial patient advocate at the CRU; and a Data Safety Monitoring Committee.
• Dr. Bateman is uniquely qualified by virtue of his expertise and experience, and the research could not be conducted as safely or effectively without his involvement.
• Additionally, a plan has been developed to mitigate the financial conflict of interest.
Blood amyloid-beta relationship with amyloid plaques and CSF amyloid-beta
PROJECT NARRATIVE Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia and currently has no disease-modifying treatments or simple, accurate diagnostic tests. The goal of this project is to further develop and validate a blood test for amyloid-beta (a protein thought to cause AD) in order to quickly and inexpensively screen people for AD clinical trials and eventually diagnose AD in the clinic. Findings from this study may lead to more accurate diagnostic tests and more effective treatments for AD.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.
Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.
ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
