Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. Equity Interest - Non-publicly traded entity ( e.g., stock, stock option, or other ownership interest)
Based on WU’s Research COI Policy and the Procedures for Determining and Managing Research Financial Conflicts of Interests, the CIRC determined Dr. Hultgren's personal financial relationship with Fimbrion, related to the above referenced research, creates a financial conflict of interest due to the following reasons:
a) The primary focus of Fimbrion Therapeutics, an entity with which Dr. Hultgren owns equity, is to commercialize the IP being evaluated in the above mentioned research.
b) The determination for Fimbrion to license the studied IP in the future will be in large part based on the outcomes of the research.
c) Dr. Hultgren's role as PI of the research could directly affect all aspects of the study.
While the CIRC determined Dr. Hultgren has a financial conflict of interest, there are mitigating factors that help address the situation:
1) The research is basic in nature and in its early stages.
2) Dr. Hultgren is uniquely qualified by virtue of his expertise and experience, and the research could not be conducted as effectively without his involvement.
3) While there is the possibility for a license in the future based on the results of the study, there is no active license for the IP being studied.

MOLECULAR BASIS OF E. COLI ADHESINS IN BLADDER DISORDERS
In this proposal we seek to investigate the effects of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) superinfection and catheterization of the urinary tract on predisposing to recurrences or more severe chronic cystitis. We also test the efficacy of novel mannoside compounds for oral treatment of UTI caused by virulent and multi-drug resistant strains that have spread globally. Understanding the effect of these common complications will give insight into how urinary tract infection occurs and progresses in human patients and is necessary to develop effective therapies to combat a rise in antibiotic resistant bacteria.
