Conflict of Interest
Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

DXGPS
Equity Interest - Non-publicly traded entity ( e.g., stock, stock option, or other ownership interest)
The committees determined Dr. Song’s personal financial relationship with DxGPS, related to the above referenced research, creates a financial conflict of interest due to the following reasons:
• Dr. Song’s personal financial relationship is related to the research because the research is evaluating a product licensed by DxGPS.
• Dr. Song is entitled to future royalties from the licensing of the IP, which is evaluated in the above listed research being conducted at WU
• The primary focus of DxGPS, an entity with which Dr. Song owns equity, is to commercialize the D-Histo IP, which is a code correction for the DBSI IP being developed and evaluated in the research listed above.
• The outcomes of the research could directly benefit DxGPS.
• Since Dr. Song owns equity in the company, Dr. Song could directly benefit should the company’s equity value increase as a result of the study.
• Dr. Song’s role, as identified below, could directly affect the study.
While the committees determined financial conflicts of interest exist, they concluded sufficient mechanisms exist to ensure the objectivity and integrity of the research and adequate protections are in place for the human research participants, based on the following reasons:
• Dr. Song is uniquely qualified by virtue of his expertise and experience, and the research could not be conducted as effectively without his involvement.
• There will be non-conflicted individuals involved in the data collection and data analysis.
• The clinical studies are low-risk to patients and will not be used to impact clinical care.
• The preclinical research is basic and in its early stages
• The studies are evaluating the DBSI IP, which may have limited benefit to the development of D-Histo, the primary purpose of DxGPS.
• Additionally, a plan has been developed to mitigate the financial conflicts of interest, which is outlined below.
Biomarkers and Pathogenesis of MS: From Mouse to Human
Narrative (Overall PPG) MS affects over 2 million persons worldwide, and about one person in a thousand in the U.S. The cause of MS is not understood. Thus far, there is no cure for MS. Studying this chronic disease of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves is challenging, because the disease changes over time. It often becomes progressive, a stage of MS for which there are no good treatments. A major impediment to a better understanding of MS is that investigators rarely obtain tissue samples for study, because to perform biopsies of the brain or spinal cord has potential to cause harm. This Program Project brings together 12 investigators in a research design comprised of three Projects and supported by three Cores to address several current needs in the field of MS. Our projects are designed to integrate with one another, with an ultimate focus on human disease.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.
Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.
ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
